What’s the hype with coconut oil?
Coconut oil is getting a lot of attention these days and for good reason. There are endless benefits to this wonderful oil. If you are not allergic to coconuts, then I highly recommend adding it into your life. From cooking to skincare to overall wellness there are so many internal and external benefits to coconut oil. It helps to strengthen the immune system, has anti-aging, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties just to name a few.
What is the difference between refined and unrefined?
Refined coconut oil has been bleached, deodorized and gone through a heating process. Unrefined is known as “virgin” or “pure” and has not gone through a heating process. Since unrefined has not gone through a refining process it is considered less hygienic. There is a lot of debate on which one is better but most people believe that it is better to cook with refined and use unrefined/virgin/pure/organic in its raw form for all other uses.
I started using coconut oil several years ago in place of olive oil/ butter in sautéing and baking. I tend to go back and forth between the two. I love coconut oil for its sweeter flavor. Coconut oil has a high smoke point so it makes it versatile for cooking. If you are cooking at high heats with coconut oil you will want to get the refined coconut oil.
I too was skeptical when it came to using coconut oil on my skin, but after a lot of research I finally went for it. Wow, the results have been amazing. I absolutely love it as my facial cleanser/ moisturizer. It takes eye makeup /mascara off better than anything I have ever used. My skin does not feel oily or greasy like one would think. It actually helps to lessen oil production and help clear clogged pores. The oil actually dissolves oil and impurities from your skin. So those of you that are acne prone and oily do not be afraid to use coconut oil, it will actually help.
How to use it as a cleanser:
I scoop a very small amount out of the jar (a little goes a long way) and warm it up in my hands to liquefy. Spread it all over my face just like I am using a cleanser. Then, with a warm wash cloth hold the cloth over my face for just a couple of seconds to steam my face. Then gently wipe off any makeup or mascara that has not dissolved. That is it! If you need more moisture you can take a tiny bit and apply it to you skin. It’s an awesome lip moisturizer/ treatment for chapped lips.
Coconut oil is great for arthritic / achy joints and muscles. It contains a group of fats known as medium-chain fatty acids. By nature, these fatty acids possess important healing properties. Internally and externally coconut oil benefits arthritis pain because it acts as:
- An anti-inflammatory
- A pain reliever on muscle & joints when massaged into the skin increasing blood flow and circulation.
It’s not only great for human joints but also I have found it helpful for my sweet furry puppy dogs stiff joints. They go crazy over the taste. They come running every time I go near the jar sitting on the counter. They love it as a treat when I put it on their chew toys and bones.
OTHER COOL BENEFITS:
It is easy to digest so it is great for your digestive system
Coconut oil is a good healthy fat with lauric acid which helps heart problems like high cholesterol and blood pressure.
Helps with topical skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis
Makes a great massage oil and all over body moisturizer.
Helps heal skin after injury including sunburns.
Beneficial for teeth and gums in a process called oil pulling. Oil pulling cleans/ detoxifies gums and teeth and also whitens them. Swish around in your mouth daily for best results.
These are just some of the amazing benefits of coconut oil. Make sure you buy high quality organic oil for best results. Coconut oil can be found in the cooking section of most grocery stores. I hope you see amazing results in whatever way you choose to use it!!
